George Sully is an award-winning Canadian designer, author, publisher, cultural advocate and accomplished public speaker whose career has helped expand the possibilities of Canadian design. A self-taught creative raised in Ottawa’s west-end public housing, Sully has built a multidisciplinary career spanning fashion, footwear, publishing, product design and cultural infrastructure.
He is the founder and president of Black Designers of Canada, the national platform he launched in 2020 to increase the visibility and advancement of Black Canadian designers. He is also the founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of BDC Magazine, an inclusive print and immersive digital publication dedicated to the people, brands and ideas shaping culture.
Through Motion Editorial, Sully is helping to redefine digital publishing by combining editorial storytelling with motion, sound, video and interactive design. His work has been carried by Saks Fifth Avenue, Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Hudson’s Bay and Simons. He is also the original designer of the Starfleet boot created for Star Trek: Discovery.
As a compelling and experienced speaker, Sully brings honesty, humour and lived experience to conversations about creativity, resilience, identity, representation and cultural change. Drawing from more than two decades of experience, he offers audiences a powerful perspective on navigating adversity, challenging established systems and creating opportunities where none previously existed.
Sully’s honours include the inaugural CAFA Changemaker Award, the FGI Visionary Award, NOTABLE Designer of the Year and an honorary degree in Brand Design from George Brown Polytechnic. His memoir, Designing in the Dark: A Memoir of Vision, Resilience, and Redefining Canadian Design, will be published by ECW Press on October 6, 2026.
